JDA Weekly — September 20, 2026

JDA’s week was dominated by traffic and drainage-linked road works, especially the Gyan Ashram culvert closure and Mahal Road U-turn package, alongside scrutiny of road-safety design choices.

JDA news flow was relatively concentrated this week, with the clearest activity around traffic engineering and drainage-linked road capacity work rather than a new housing-scheme launch or a major land allotment round. Jaipur Development Authority’s near-term agenda was led by the Gyan Ashram culvert widening and the Mahal Road signal-free/U-turn package, both of which directly affect daily movement in Mansarovar, Gurjar Ki Thadi, Jagatpura and adjoining corridors (ETV Bharat Rajasthan). The week also brought scrutiny of JDA’s road-design choices after former JDA engineers and road-safety experts questioned the use of “Jaipur Pink” on Mahal Road U-turn structures and the underlying traffic assumptions for the scheme (The Times of India).

Traffic and Road Works

JDA said four of seven at-grade U-turns on the roughly 7-km Mahal Road stretch from Jagatpura RoB to the Dravyavati river had been completed and would be opened from Monday, with the package intended to reduce long detours and make traffic flow easier (ETV Bharat Rajasthan). The authority approved ₹1,212.11 lakh for the Mahal Road U-turn project, while ETV Bharat reported that JDA framed the intervention as a way to address difficulties caused by unplanned cuts along the corridor (ETV Bharat Rajasthan).

The same corridor drew safety criticism: former JDA chief engineer Raj Kumar Sharma told The Times of India that the pink colouring on concrete structures had no sanction under standard road-safety markings, and a senior JDA engineer acknowledged that the colour would need to be changed (The Times of India). The Times of India also reported that experts questioned whether U-turn diversion was appropriate where right-turning traffic is high, and the article said JDA was spending ₹12 crore on seven U-turn bays between Jagatpura RoB and the Dravyavati river culvert, with four already opened to traffic (The Times of India).

Gyan Ashram Culvert Closure and Widening

JDA planned to start work on the Gyan Ashram culvert from 20 September, with traffic on the Gurjar Ki Thadi–Mansarovar link to remain closed for about six months during the work (Sach Bedhadak). Sach Bedhadak reported that the existing 6.5-metre-wide culvert would be widened to 21 metres at a cost of about ₹8.5 crore, while ETV Bharat put the project cost at about ₹9 crore and described the structure as 80 metres long (Sach Bedhadak); (ETV Bharat Rajasthan).

The work is not just a traffic-capacity intervention: Sach Bedhadak reported that the culvert height above the river bed would rise from 2 metres to 4.5 metres, and ETV Bharat linked the project to recurring waterlogging during rain (Sach Bedhadak); (ETV Bharat Rajasthan). During the closure, vehicles travelling from Gurjar Ki Thadi toward Shipra Path were directed to use the Ganga-Jamuna petrol pump route or the Riddhi-Siddhi Modern School route (Sach Bedhadak).

What to Watch Next Month

Watch whether JDA completes the promised rectification of Mahal Road U-turn markings, whether the first weeks of the Gyan Ashram closure create spillover congestion on New Sanganer Road, Shyam Nagar, Mansarovar and Prithviraj Nagar approaches, and whether the authority publishes clearer diversion maps or enforcement arrangements as the six-month culvert work settles into a routine (The Times of India); (Sach Bedhadak).
